Every year about 400 U.S. workers die in trenches and 6,400 are seriously injured. Soil is very heavy and it can fall in at any time. If someone is in a trench when a wall fails, they can be trapped very quickly. Being buried, however is not the only risk at an excavation site. Training to recognize potential hazards like poisonous gases, falling objects and dangerous conditions is a must. Knowing as much as possible about working conditions can help keep workers safe.

This course introduces the OSHA 1926.650 standard covering excavation work safety and competent person responsibilities. It provides training to recognize hazards associated with work in different types of excavations and trenching, and the skills needed as a competent person.
